In a swift response to circulating reports, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has vehemently denied claims of a national grid collapse on Saturday. Ndidi Mbah, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, issued a statement in Abuja to set the record straight.
What Really Happened?
According to Mbah, the Osogbo-Ihovour line tripped at approximately 1:41 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Benin-Omotosho line. However, these incidents only affected bulk power supply to the Lagos area, with no nationwide grid collapse occurring.
The Facts and Figures
Mbah revealed that the total generation on the grid before the tripping was 4,335.63 Megawatts (MW), which dropped to 2,573.23 MW after the incidents. This significant difference in power generation clearly indicates that the grid did not experience a complete collapse.
Restoration Efforts Underway
While the tripping affected several power plants, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, TCN has successfully restored power to all except the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still undergoing repairs.
A Call for Accurate Reporting
Mbah emphasized TCN's commitment to building a more robust transmission grid, despite ongoing challenges. She also urged the public to exercise caution when sharing information, stressing the importance of disseminating accurate and verifiable facts to avoid spreading misinformation.
